My name is Paulien Oltheten, visual artist. I analyse human behaviour in the public space, often in direct contact with passersby. I film, photograph, and draw, primarily focusing on the physical aspect, daily rituals and routines of objects and people. The way they are positioned, suspended, teeter, lean, buttress, push and pull in the world around them. As a contemporary urban anthropologist, I document these behaviours and patterns, often involving a subtle correlation with a purposefully chosen location or context. The business district La Défense in Paris for instance, a dry riverbed in Iran, and recently, the pilgrimage site of Lourdes. I then arrange and commentate my research material to shape into a narrative by way of photography, video, publications, lectures, and performances.
