The h3h biennial took place from 3 June to 16 July 2023. For the third time in 2023, the monasteries of the Holy Triangle in the North Brabant town of Oosterhout provided the special stage for a contemporary art biennial of international stature. The 2023 h3h biennial (formerly Kunst in de Heilige Driehoek) carried Faith as its theme.
Artist selection
At the invitation of curators Hendrik Driessen and Rebecca Nelemans, 25 artists from home and abroad showed new and existing works inspired by the unique location and its rich historical and spiritual traditions. They were Ghada Amer, Maarten Baas, David Bade, Marwan Bassiouni, David Claerbout, Delphine Courtillot, Anne Geene, Lisette de Greeuw, Loek Grootjans, Elise ‘t Hart, Frank Havermans, Laura Henno, Ann Veronica Janssens, Folkert de Jong, Alicja Kwade, Rudy Luijters, Rick van Meel, Paulien Oltheten, Kathrin Schlegel, Fiona Tan, Fran Van Coppenolle, Ine Vermee, Wessel Verrijt, Dré Wapenaar and Romee van Oers. Also selected were works by the late artists Piet den Blanken and JCJ Vanderheyden.
The curators attached great importance to the connection an artist manages to make with his or her work to a specific location within the monastery area and the theme of Faith. The symbiosis created between the work and the place was guiding in the choice of artists. The artworks on display ranged from paintings, sculptures, (sound) installation, photography and video, to monumental interventions in the landscape.
