The second biennial took place from 10 July to 15 August 2021 and lasted five weeks and six weekends. Well-known artists and young talent from home and abroad were invited to present their work or create new work for this biennial. The exhibition took place in parts of the monastery buildings, monastery gardens, monastery churches and other monumental buildings of De Heilige Driehoek. Half of the works on display were existing works, while the other half were new works made especially for this biennial – and the place.
The exhibition took place in a spiritual, meaningful environment: monumental monasteries where monastic life is still lived daily, with hushed interior spaces and a vast and differentiated landscape around them. Before anything else, this was the curators’ starting point. Out of respect for the atmosphere in the monasteries and their surroundings. They therefore did not seek conflict, but rather the connection that helps new relationships and insights to emerge. In this way, too, they gave shape to the theme of Hope.
